Proper Height for the Closet Rod
There is no mandatory minimum height for closet rod bars, but standard heights for cabinet bars do exist. However, the best height for your closet bar depends on what type of closet you are going to install and what you are going to hang on the bar.
Typical bedroom closet bars hang at 45 1/2 inches from the floor, which is just under 4 feet and allows plenty of room for shirts, pants and even hanging coats. This height also allows for hanging right waist pants on clip hangers instead of draping them over the hanging clothes rod, which often forms a small crease in the center of the pants. If you are hanging long dresses, hang the bar a little higher at 50 inches so the dress does not touch the floor.
Coat closet bars hang higher from the ground, as they accommodate long coats and other items, for example, sleeping bags and snowsuits. These bars hang at 5 feet or higher, being 60 inches. Depending on how long your coat is, the rod can be locked at 6 feet. Measure the length of the longer jacket, and add a foot to allow storing shoes and boots undergarments. The height also depends on how high the shelves are high. Place the rod at least 6 inches below the shelves to allow enough space to remove hangers.
